Inspired by the luminous colours of shallow coastal waters, the Okinawa Tide Mashiko Ware Oval Dish combines the earthy warmth of Japanese pottery with the remarkable brilliance of molten glass.
Handmade in Mashiko Town, Tochigi Prefecture, an area renowned for its pottery tradition, each oval dish is finished with a vivid Turkish blue glaze. Glass is placed inside the vessel before kiln firing, where the heat melts it into the ceramic surface. The result is a wonderfully fluid interior filled with turquoise, emerald, aqua and deep ocean-blue tones.
Look closely and you’ll discover fine crackled textures and pools of shifting colour reminiscent of sunlight passing through clear water. Because the glass and glaze respond individually to the heat of the kiln, no two dishes will have exactly the same pattern or colouring.
