The Meaning of Hechimon

Hechimon is a word used by Shigaraki craftspeople to describe things with an unconventional or individual character.

The philosophy celebrates the idea that handmade vessels don’t need to be perfectly uniform. Much like forms found in nature, each piece can have its own expression.

Variations in glaze flow, colour, texture, firing marks and form aren’t something to hide. They’re an important part of the vessel’s character. This approach gives Hechimon pottery an appealing warmth and spontaneity that mass-produced ceramics can’t easily reproduce.

Each vessel feels less like an identical industrial product and more like something shaped through a conversation between clay, glaze, fire and the craftsperson.

What Is Shigaraki Ware?

Shigaraki ware, or Shigaraki-yaki, comes from the historic pottery-producing region of Shigaraki in Koka City, Shiga Prefecture.

Shigaraki is recognised as one of Japan’s Six Ancient Kilns, with a ceramic tradition stretching back more than a thousand years. In 1976, Shigaraki ware was officially designated a Traditional Craft of Japan.

The tradition is admired for earthy clay, expressive firing effects and surfaces that embrace natural variation rather than mechanical perfection.
